Should I call this guy, what would you do?

I met this guy online, and he seems really nice. We just started talking on the phone,twice thus far, and before we hang up, he tells me to call him this evening. I am an old fashioned type of girl, and I usually won't call a guy until I know him better. The other thing is, he said he would call me this morning, but just called me a few minutes ago, so to me, this is already a sign of inconsistency. I don't have all of my apples in one basket, but should I put this apple back? What would you do?
