Pharmacy Technician help?

Hello internet world! So i have been thinking about becoming a pharmacy technician for quite sometime but have come upon many inconsistencies with the information related to this career choice. i know to get more money (between the 11-15$ range instead of below that) you need to be certified. but i have been reading that some went to take courses at city colleges and the like, while others just purchased a review book and went to take the exam. i live in illinois (if this helps anyone) and i have looked at numerous forums regarding this subject, but what i want to know is if anyone has had personal experience with this. like what city college (im looking at daley) did you go to, if any? if buying the book and studying from that instead of going to the certification course helped. because ive also read that the certification course merely HELPS you to get ready for the exam and im not sure if they actually GIVE you the exam. and if in illinois you need more than just the certificate? many questions guys, yes i know, but ALL help and information is appreciated.
